Similkameen

Similkameen wine is known for its structure, elegance and minerality.  A deep path forged by a winding river cuts through a mountain valley that is 90 kilometres in length. Whenever travelling through this valley you can almost imagine going back in time, stumbling across a town from the Wild West with their well trodden boardwalks. The region is renowned & prides itself on being a champion of organic farming in Canada. It provides a pocket of 600 acres of land fit for viticulture.  Most of the sites can be found on west facing slopes near the small town of Keremeos. The Cascade Mountains protect the valley from the Pacific’s influences & also provide a warm blanket of reflecting rock for the vineyards, lessening diurnal fluctuation. The Similkameen is a semi arid climate & can have up to two more hours of sunlight per day than the Napa Valley. This means more time for phenolics to develop along with a balance of cool nights & high altitude to retain acidity & freshness . The glaciers & their streams provide the vineyards at the base of the mountains with alluvial soil & good drainage which is rich in limestone, schist & granite adding a delicious minerality to the wines. The valley lends itself to the Burgundian varietals Chardonnay & Gamay as well as Bordeaux reds such as Cab Sauv & Merlot among a couple other french varieties.
