Okanagan Falls

This lovely little wine valley is nestled on a piece of land between two lakes, Skaha & Vaseaux, with a beautiful undulating landscape, created by the Glaciers that once sat here. The Okanagan Falls has a terroir that is unique from the rest of the Okanagan Valley, earning it a Sub Geographical Indicator. It is relatively small with just over 30 vineyards & around 150 hectares of vines. Located near the top end of the valley’s desert climate this region has everything you need for perfect grape growing conditions. The grapes are able to retain their acidity from the cool evenings and elevation which ranges 400 - 500 metres. The dry weather means little risk of frost & the grapes feel the benefit of the long hot days, aided by the reflective heat of the lakes. The Okanagan Falls soil could be characterised by its subsoil which contains big gravel pieces proving great for drainage, but have some variation from site to site allowing unique flavour profiles from vineyard to vineyard. All of these components contribute to its amazing terroir. It’s most planted varieties are Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir. I have a soft spot for this Sub GI, not only because it contains some of my favourite wineries in the valley, but also, the sunsets overlooking Vaseux lake from a vineyard sitting above are something I have found hard to beat.
